1958-Centennial-LogoCHARLESTON, WV — Established as part of West Virginia’s Centennial Celebration in 1963, the National Youth Science Camp continues to be held in West Virginia as a service to the nation.  As one of the few programs that originated with the Centennial Celebration that is still in operation, more than five thousand ambitious, young, innovative students have spent their summer between high school and college in the mountains of West Virginia.

While the alumni above are particularly remarkable in their achievement, it is very important to also recognize that:

  • More than 99% of NYSC alumni receive a bachelor’s degree
  • More than 50% of NYSC alumni receive a doctorate
  • More than 85% of NYSC alumni are working in a STEM field
  • Nearly 60% of NYSC alumni report that the NYSC had an influence on their career choice
  • Many return to West Virginia and volunteer their time as expert presenters at the NYSC, the West Virginia Youth Science Camp, the Youth Science Discovery Experience, and the West Virginia Governor’s School for Mathematics and Science.

These alumni are supportive of the NYSF’s STEM programs and understand the importance that the establishment of the National Center for Youth Science Education in West Virginia. The NYSF is working to further leverage the alumni as a resource for the benefit of science and mathematics education in West Virginia. Beginning in 1994, the NYSF has operated programs based on the NYSC to the benefit of students from across West Virginia.
